Laurie Stras: Music from medieval and Renaissance Convents
13 April @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
For just over 20 years, Professor Laurie Stras has been co-director (with founder Deborah Roberts) of Musica Secreta (https://musicasecreta.com), an ensemble dedicated to exploring the music written for and by women from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century.
Laurie will talk about her ground-breaking research into the music sung by – and often composed by – nuns, discuss some of the challenges of performing this “music for equal voices”, and illustrate her talk with musical examples. Scores and instrumental parts will be provided for participants to play or sing along (muted). Lower voices (tenors and basses) can of course join in at their own pitch….
The music is gorgeous – here’s an example on YouTube: Tribulationes civitatum audivimus, thought to be written by Leonora d’Este.
